I walked into my office, touching the nameplate on the door for luck. After successfully completing my experiment in genetic duplication, I was finally ready to move on to Phase 2. I sat down behind my desk.
"Lark, please come to my office."
A moment later, I heard the whirring of servos as my Lab Assistant Robot K1, came rolling into my office.
"Lark, I am finished in the lab for now. Please take all the necessary samples and get them into the freezer. I want double samples of all major organs and triple samples of the brain."
"Yes, Doctor. Lawson."
Lark reversed towards the door but stopped just inside. The front door security camera had sent an alert.
"Doctor Lawson, a member of Law Enforcement is at the door. Shall I send him away?"
"No, Lark, go and escort him in. Of course, be sure the lab blinds are closed."
"Yes, Dr. Lawson."
As I waited for my guest, I closed my eyes and reviewed the steps to begin Phase 2. I had just rebooted my BIMP and needed to check that all the files had been transferred. I was pleased to see that everything was working as designed. Earlier versions of the BIMP had a few bugs, but I had managed to correct them.
Item #1- dispose of all extraneous genetic material
Item #2- prepare test subject for complete scan
Item #3- after thawing, prep lab for Phase 2
I opened my eyes to see a tall, neat looking individual step through my door. I rose and stuck out my hand.
"Dr. Kevin Lawson? I'm Detective Sam Thomas. I appreciate your taking the time to see me."
I looked at the badge he displayed in his left hand as I shook his right.
"Not at all, Detective." I motioned towards my guest chair. The detective sat down and took out a pocket tablet. "How can I help you?"
The detective looked around my office then looked down at his tablet. He leaned forward in his chair as he looked me in the eye.
"I'm looking into the disappearance of Kimberly Lewis. Her sister reported her missing last Friday, and told me that she worked here at your lab."
"That's correct. She does work here, but I have not spoken to her since last Thursday. She was going to take a few days off. Surely you don't think anything has happened to her?"
"Well, the sister said that Kimberly never goes more than a day or two without checking in. Since she hadn't heard from her for over four days, she was beginning to worry."
"I see. I am sure there is nothing to worry about. Kimberly will return very soon."
"Can I ask, what does Miss Lewis do here at the lab?"
"Kimberly is my lab assistant. She helps me with all my experiments and keeps track of my schedule for me."
"Sounds like you two are pretty close."
"Kimberly is the best lab assistant I have ever had. Irreplaceable. I can barely function without her."
"What do you do here?"
"I do genetic implementation."
"Oh, like cloning?"
"Only in the broadest of terms. No, what I do is genetic duplication."
"How does that differ from cloning?"
"Genetic duplication is the next generation in experimental genetics. It is like comparing computers to cave drawings. You see detective, in a lab setting, geneticist have only been able to "grow" bits and pieces. I am working on a complete duplication, including memories and emotions. The only thing that has eluded me so far is the human sense of humor."
"I've read about that. The so called 'God' project."
"That is a name that the naysayers have given it. I am not God, but I don't see why the flaws that are inherent to the human body should not be corrected in subsequent iterations."
"So you think by tinkering with the human genome you can alter the bodies make-up in future generations?"
"Not future generations. Future iterations. I want to be able to take what God has given us and perfect it."
"Pardon me Detective. I need to speak to Lark."
"Lark is that robot that let me in?"
"Yes Lark. What is it?"
"I have completed the lab work that you requested. What is my next task."
"Proceed to the prep work for Phase 2. The first item on the agenda is to dispose of the extraneous genetic material."
"Yes Dr. Lawson."
"Excuse me, Doc, but what the hell was that?"
"What was what?"
"You closed your eyes and it seemed as though you left the room."
"Oh, I am sorry Detective. I was utilizing my BIMP to communicate with Lark."
"BIMP? What is that?"
"BIMP stands for 'Brain Implanted Multi Processor.' Essentially, it is a micro computer that is made from human tissue."
"So you have a bimp in your head. Ha, that's a good one!"
"I'm sorry. What do you mean?"
"Like Inspector Clouseau. You know- the Pink Panther?"
"Oh. Right. Ha. Excuse me Detective. Are we just about through here?"
"Just one more thing. There were reports that there was an explosion last Thursday. Several people near here heard it but no one could pinpoint exactly where it came from. Would you know anything about that?"
"I am afraid I do not know anything about that. Thursday was Kimberly's last day before she left, and we were busy finishing up our experiment."
"Okay. Well, thanks Doc. If you hear from Miss Lewis, would you please give me a call?"
"Lark, the detective is ready to leave."
"You just did it again, didn't you?"
"Guilty. Lark will show you out. Just give him all your contact information and I will be sure to notify you when Kimberly returns."

"Lark. Please bring in the female genetic material."
"Yes, Doctor Lawson."
